Chapter 12

The luxury motor coach is easier to drive than I’d feared. My brief experience driving bobtail trucks for the plant nursery back in Arizona has come in handy. And I’m extremely grateful for a bus with an automatic transmission. However, now that we’re out on the open road, my thoughts are wandering.

What’s going to happen when we approach the Canadian border? If Erick figured out my not-so-subtle code referencing CC, his Canadian Mountie buddy, there’s likely to be an armed reception. Since I’m sitting in the front seat, driving the getaway vehicle, there’s a higher-than-average chance that their sniper will take me out first.

I’ve seen the movies. The sniper takes out the driver, the bus swerves, rolls, and skids to a crashing halt just before hitting the law enforcement barricade.

After doing more than my share of stupid things in my life, I’ve had to face my mortality more than once, but today has a sense of finality I’ve never felt before.

The energy of the crew is somewhat relaxed, now that we’ve officially gotten away and are outside the city limits. The Hatter’s not even holding his shotgun on me anymore. Even though I knew it wasn’t loaded, there’s a sense of relief when the boom stick is removed from my right shoulder.

Glancing up into the mirror, I observe the gang. Smiley and Alice are sitting together on the left side of the bus. She has the window seat and has pushed her mask up to get a better view.

She’s young. Much younger than I imagined. In fact—my psychic senses flicker back online—she’s a minor. Great! Now I’ll have to fight between my urge to save her and my need to see justice served. At least I got that gun out of her hands.

Right! I have a loaded gun. I could stop this bus, threaten them with my gun, and run away. Sure, that’d be the thing to do if I was looking to get an award for the world’s shortest unsuccessful escape.

There are still three armed robbers on this bus, and my brief relationship with them has definitely taught me that the White Rabbit didn’t come to play.

Ears and Queenie still have their disguises on and their guns drawn. Although, the ringleader’s hold is way more relaxed than it was in the bank. “Hey, Mitzy?”

“What’s up, Doc?”

Queenie and Hatter chuckle at my Bugs Bunny reference.

“You had a solid plan. I’m almost sorry we’re going to have to hold you for ransom when we hit Canadian soil.”

“Well, you could always let me go, and clear your conscience.”

He laughs loudly and adjusts his pistol. “Nah, I don’t want your sheriff to think we’ve gone soft.”

At the mention of Erick, my heart sinks. I blew it. I had the world’s perfect man, and I chose to keep my secrets rather than trust him fully. Now I’m going to die in a hail of gunfire and never have the opportunity—

The engine sputters. My eyes widen and I look into the mirror.

The White Rabbit is on his feet, walking toward me.
